Big Bailey Bus Bonus

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will receive a $650,000 Federal Transit Administration grant to upgrade bus service on Bailey Avenue. Part of the plan is a look at "bus rapid transit," which would be new to our region. BRT could introduce dedicated bus lanes, synchronized signals, bumped-out curbs to accommodate specially designed buses, and stops that are more like rail stations than traditional bus shelters.

Future BRT buses could be larger and bendable in the middle, like those seen in New York City and Toronto. Based on current trends, BRT buses could also be electric. Other cities experimenting with BRT have seen improvements in speed, dependability, and overall quality of service.
